The Big Picture
World of Hyatt and Marriott Bonvoy are the two hotel programs most serious points travelers care about. But they serve very different strategies. Hyatt delivers better cents-per-point value on almost every redemption. Marriott offers a vastly larger global footprint and the fifth-night-free benefit that can swing the math on longer stays.
Understanding which program fits your travel style is the first step toward maximizing your hotel points.
Earning Points
World of Hyatt: The World of Hyatt Credit Card earns 4x at Hyatt properties, 2x on dining, fitness, and transit, and 1x everywhere else. The earning rate is modest compared to Marriott's co-branded cards, but the value per point is significantly higher.
Marriott Bonvoy: The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card earns 6x at Marriott properties and 2x everywhere else. The Brilliant card earns 6x at Marriott and 3x on dining and flights. More aggressive earning, but each point is worth less.
Redemption Value
This is where the programs diverge sharply:
- Hyatt average CPP: 1.8-2.2 cents per point across all redemptions
- Marriott average CPP: 0.7-1.0 cents per point across all redemptions
However, Marriott's fifth-night-free benefit adds 20% value to any stay of five nights or longer, narrowing the gap for extended trips.
Elite Status
Hyatt Globalist is widely considered the best hotel elite status in the industry. Benefits include suite upgrades (confirmed, not waitlisted), complimentary breakfast, free parking, club lounge access, and a Guest of Honor feature that lets you share benefits with others. Earning it requires 60 qualifying nights or earning it through the credit card's milestone structure.
Marriott Titanium/Ambassador offers suite upgrade awards (but they are limited and often unavailable at popular properties), complimentary breakfast at select brands, and late checkout. Ambassador status (100 nights + $23,000 spend) adds a personal ambassador for booking assistance.
The Verdict
Choose Hyatt if: You prioritize value per point, travel to destinations where Hyatt has strong properties (Maldives, Japan, Caribbean, major U.S. cities), and want the industry's best elite status.
Choose Marriott if: You need global coverage (Marriott has 8,500+ properties vs. Hyatt's ~1,300), regularly take 5+ night stays (fifth-night-free), or value airline transfer partners (Marriott points transfer to 40+ airline programs).
Our recommendation: If you are a Chase cardholder, start with Hyatt. The 1:1 transfer ratio from Chase Ultimate Rewards, combined with Hyatt's superior CPP, makes it the strongest hotel value proposition in points travel.
